City Investment Revitalizes Curling Rink at Mission Leisure Centre

A major investment by the City of Mission has revitalized the curling rink at the Mission Leisure Centre.

The project addressed critical infrastructure issues with the over 40-year-old rink floor, which had deteriorated significantly and was no longer reliable. The scope of the work included a complete removal and replacement of the concrete floor, the installation of a new subfloor cooling system, and the addition of a modern chiller to support upgraded infrastructure and improve long-term operational reliability. The prime contractor was Alfre Horie Construction Ltd.

In addition to the City’s investment, the Mission Granite Curling Club has introduced upgrades to enhance the player experience and improve sustainability. These include refurbishing the curling rocks and replacing single-use painted ice lines with a reusable vinyl curling rink liner — an environmentally friendly option that reduces energy costs and lasts over 30 years.

“With refurbished rocks and a refreshed look, we’re ready to welcome curlers of all ages and skill levels back to the rink this season. We’re excited to continue to grow our membership by introducing new curlers to the sport,” said club president Jason Hnatiuk.

The Mission Granite Curling Club is hosting a free Learn to Curl session on Saturday, October 4, from 1–3 p.m. The event is designed for participants ages 12 and up who are new to the sport. All equipment will be provided, and participants will receive instruction on the fundamentals of curling, from throwing rocks to sweeping.

Established in 1954, the Mission Granite Curling Club is home to more than 200 members and offers a variety of leagues for adults and seniors, as well as curling instruction for children aged 5-12. The club also runs a dedicated learning league to help new curlers develop their skills and confidence on the ice. Each year, the club hosts several bonspiels, bringing together curlers from across the region in the spirit of competition and community.
